James Lloyd Kendall, loving father, beloved grandfather, and devoted husband for 46 years of Clara E. (Bowlen), died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 1, 2017.
Lloyd was born on April 6, 1936 in Fairchance, Pennsylvania and was a 1955 graduate of Georges High School. He was predeceased by his father James Gribble Kendall, mother Ruth Vivian Cole (Swaney), stepfather Bruce Cole, and stepmother Anne Kendall. He was a member of the Uniontown Church of the Brethren where he was a dedicated Sunday School teacher, choir member, and church servant.
Lloyd was a man of many talents – he was an artist, sculptor, carpenter, educator, and a gifted singer and saxophonist, fronting the popular regional band “The Men of Chantz” from 1959 to 1987. He was a consummate entertainer, captivating local audiences with his performances for many years and never hesitating to take the stage to make others happy through his music. All who knew Lloyd recognized the meticulous amount of time he put into many projects – musical and otherwise - such as the restoration of his 1934 “Woody” station wagon which in and of itself became a celebrated work of art. He affectionately shared his skills and artistic talents with his many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who survive him and they live on through them.
Lloyd shared his talents in many ways with the greater community as well, serving as a past President of the Fayette County Homebuilders Association and the Smithfield Rotary Club, a member of the National Woody Club, and on the Fayette County Planning and Zoning Commission. In addition to teaching building maintenance at the Fayette County Vo-Tech School, Lloyd worked previously at the Edgar Thompson Steel Works and was the proprietor of Kendall Construction Company, the legacy of which can be found in the many houses and structures he built in the area.
As expressed in Romans (12:6-8), Lloyd possessed many gifts which he shared selflessly with others and that is how he shall be remembered: “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”
