Gertrude F. (Kozel) Roskovensky

Gertrude F. (Kozel) Roskovensky, age 92 of Fairchance, PA., died on Thursday, May 12, 2016. She was born January 13, 1924 in Collier, PA, daughter of Anton and Gertrude A. (Krovat Stifter) Kozel, both of Slovenia. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Vincent S.; infant sister, Elizabeth, sisters: Catherine and Anna Mae; brothers: Martin, Joseph, John, Anthony, and Frank. Gertrude began attending school at age 4  On the Monday following Easter, she always participated in the spelling bee and placed first.  She peddled newspapers for 11 years and enjoyed babysitting.  She took pleasure in tending her vegetable and flower gardens.  She loved to read and had a thirst for knowledge.  She was a friendly person and loved to talk with others.  She worked at the election polls for 20 years.  She enjoyed walking through local cemeteries.  She had many thoughtful friends whom she enjoyed visiting.  She traveled throughout the USA, Europe, Turkey, the Caribbean, and Canada.                    

Gertrude was a secretary for 4½ years for the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. during WWII.  During this time, she received an invitation from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to have tea in the White House. 

Gertrude and Vincent married on August 5, 1946 at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto, Canada, and honeymooned in Niagara Falls, Canada.  

Gertrude was a member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church and participated in many activities. 

Surviving are her five children:  Carol Ferris of Istanbul, Turkey, Attorney Vincent J. Roskovensky, II, and his wife Christine (Bruni) of Uniontown, PA, Gerald and his wife, Nancy (Carr) of W. Milton, PA, LTC (Ret) Denise McCormick and her husband, Gary of Smithfield, PA, and Jean Thompson and her husband, James (Butch) of Fairchance, PA; eleven grandchildren:  Sean Grskovich of North Huntingdon, PA, David Ferris and his wife Rachel (Bardo) of Akron, OH; James Ferris and his wife Samantha (Geise) of Pittsburgh, PA, Canan Anya Aksin of San Diego, CA, Attorneys Vincent M. Roskovensky and his wife Lisa (O’Connell) of Moon Township, PA, Jeremy Roskovensky and Kelly Baker of Red Lion, PA, Doctors Gregory Roskovensky and his wife Sara (Haines) of Ann Arbor, MI, Sarah (Roskovensky) Chan and her husband Andrew of Alexandria, VA, Daniel Roskovensky and Carly Fekete of Austin, TX, Katie (Thompson) Cassarly and her husband Josh of Pittsburgh, PA, and James Ross Thompson of Salt Lake City, UT; ten great-grandchildren: Dane Morse of Johnstown, PA., Vincent Tyler and Hailey Roskovensky of Moon Township, PA, Jake and Allie Roskovensky (their mother, Katie) and Brayden Baker of Red Lion, PA, Sydney and Ryley Ferris of Akron, OH; Sumner and Maxwell Ferris of Pittsburgh, PA,  and Adrian Kren of San Diego, CA. She also has many nieces and nephews.

A special “thank you” to the staff of Amedisys Health & Hospice Care.

Gertrude’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the GOLDSBORO-FABRY FUNERAL HOME, INC. 21 East Church Street, Fairchance, PA. 15436  (724) 564-2010 where Prayers of Transfer will be said at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. A Funeral Mass follows at 11:30 a.m. in Ss. Cyril & Methodius R. C. Church, 50 N. Morgantown Street, Fairchance, PA  15436.

 Interment will follow in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Fairchance, PA

 A Prayer Service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

 Memorial contributions may be made to Ss. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, “c/o Church Organ Fund”, 50 N. Morgantown Street, Fairchance, PA  15436
